Intellectual Disabilities |

| |
BPKS currently has 687 members who have an intellectually disability.
Many people in Bangladesh regardthe mentally impaired as 'abnormal' or 'mad' due to a lack of understanding about disability. Accordingly, people with intellectual disabilities are often neglected and others assume that they are incapable and irresponsible people. Many intellectually disabled people are institutionalized and very few have access to or are encouraged to attend schools. Many mainstream educational institutions in Bangladesh do not allow their enrolment. Few schools exist in the country which are able to cater for the needs of intellectually impaired children, meaning that the vast majority receive no education.
BPKS is working to inform people about disability and eradicate discrimination. It also works to ensure that people with intellectually disabilities can lead fulfilled, independent and productive lives.
