BPKS currently has 1916 members who are children with disabilities. These children are junior members of BPKS.

In Bangladesh, a large number of children between birth and five years of age die every year due to acute respiratory infections, tetanus, diarrhea and malnutrition. Children with disabilities are often the first victims of these diseases due to general neglect arising out of a lack of understanding about disability by families and community members. Children with disabilities are usually deprived of the same quality of food, clothing, shelter and care that other children in the family enjoy. CWDs, especially those with visual, hearing and mental disabilities, do not have access to the regular schools available in the community. There are few special schools in the country where CWDs can receive an education with the appropriate support and logistics except at the metropolitan level.

BPKS works to encourage our child members to access mainstream education, to ensure access to proper and affordable treatment and assistive devices, and to increase understanding of disability and reduce discrimination in communities. We want our children to look forward to the future.

Sohel Mia Can Speak!
When he was a toddler, Sohel Mia developed a fever that left him with a severe hearing impairment. As Sohel could not hear, he did not learn to speak. Because of his disability, Sohel did not attend school. His parents were worried and sought medical advice and treatment, but nothing was successful.
In 2002, when he was 12, Chandpur DPOD staff became aware of Sohel and his disability. Sohel was referred to the Society for Assistance to Hearing Impaired Children (SAHIC) in Dhaka. After proper tests and diagnosis, Sohel's family was told that he would be able to use a hearing aid and would be able to learn to speak.
Sohel became a member of Chandpur DPOD and was provided with a hearing aid and speech training. He began to speak within a very short time, and soon gained admission at his local government school. Chandpur DPOD provided awareness raising training to his teachers, who are all very supportive of his studies.
