Impact of the PSID program
|
|
| |
|
Due to PSID, communities, individuals, family members and people with disabilities themselves experience positive changes in knowledge, understanding and practices regarding disability issues and people with disabilities and their development. These changes in understanding and behaviors pave the way for mainstreaming people with disabilities and their development issues into community life.
The key impacts of the program are:
- changes in people's thinking, understanding and practices in relation to disability, including the thinking and behavior of people with disabilities themselves;
- stimulation of people with disabilities so they act on their initiative to improve the quality of their lives;
- that people with disabilities become role models for each other and their communities through the establishment of disabled peoples organisations, owned and managed by people with disabilities, working for the development of all; and
- establishment of a nation wide grassroots disability movement to lobby and advocate for disabled people, by disabled people.
Overall Impact
The major impact of PSID is the influence that it has on the various stakeholders to change their thinking, to expand their mind-set, and to strengthen their professionalism. This increases and improves outcomes, thus improving overall development for the area and ultimately the nation. In addition to the obvious benefits for PWDs, the general community benefits substantially from the implementation of PSID. These benefits include a more peaceful society, improvement of the general socio-economic conditions, a more enlightened attitude about PWDs, DPOs and issues of disability, better informed and greater participation by all in the political process, a safe and healthier environment for all and an advanced sense of humanitarian and social responsibility for all. A more enlightened and engaged general population, one that fully appreciates the abilities and potentialities of PWDs, assures their equal rights and full participation in community life.
