BPKS is committed to creating a safe, healthy and accessible environment for people with disabilities and their communities through the PSID program. A safe and healthy environment helps to prevent disability occurring in communities, and an accessible environment ensures that people with disabilities are not discriminated against and can participate fully in community and family life.

Very simple adjustments and additions to the standard design of a tube well and sanitary latrine can make a huge difference to a disabled person and their family. Installing accessible tubewells and latrines makes a person with a disability self-reliant, increases their personal dignity and enables them to contribute to their family and community.

Water and sanitation facilities are provided not only for PWDs but also for other community members under the PSID approach, with the facilities also aiding in the prevention of disabilities by ensuring a healthy community environment.

In many areas in Bangladesh only rudimentary bamboo latrines exist - these empty into the ponds in which people also wash and take their drinking water from. Many people are ignorant of the dangers of this practice and BPKS has begun to undertake health orientation workshops to let people know of the importance of hygiene. In PSID intervention areas, health information (such as why it is important to wash the hands after toileting) is placed on the doors of the latrines and also on roadside signs. BPKS is also developing a video on safe health practices and conducts public health rallies in each area where a poster on safe health practices is distributed.

BPKS mobilizes local technical personnel for the installation of latrines and provides training in basic maintenance of the facilities for those who receive them. BPKS uses a standard design for sanitary latrines and tube wells which helps not only disabled people, but also aging and/or sick people and for pregnant women. If more complex work is required, BPKS arranges this.

Loans are available to selected applicants for tube wells and latrines through the PAF (Program Acceleration Fund). Applications for funding are made directly to the DPOD and the GDPOD has the responsibility of collecting repayment.

In 2006 BPKS installed 54 accessible sanitary latrines in the houses of PWDs under the PSID program in the Companigonj PSID implementation areas. Direct PWD beneficiaries are 29 persons with physical disabilities and 25 persons with visual disabilities.
