Assistive
devices are important
for people with disabilities
to facilitate their independence.
Providing people with
disabilities with assistive
devices is one of the
first steps to enable
them to contribute to
their family, community
and the development process.
During
the initial implentation
period of a PSID program,
the assistive device needs
among PWDs in the implementation
area are assessed, with
appropriate assistive
devices provided to those
PWDs who need them. PWDs
are also provided with
training on use and maintenance
of the devices. In 2006, 359 assistive devices were provided to PWD beneficiaries in BPKS working areas.
BPKS recognises the importance
of providing accessible
and affordable devices
and runs an Assistive
Device Production (ADP)
Centre at the BPKS Complex
in Dhaka. The ADP Centre
produces different types
of assistive devices,
mobility aids and adaptive
materials. Prices are
set to ensure they are
affordable at the grassroots
level, and devices are
made to individual specifications.
